If they're smart, they'll buy US dollars or gold as things always revert to US dollars on top...sad but true

Canadian commodities are in demand, but remember that they are not unique and are in competition with the same commodities offered worldwide. Since they are now expensive, you can expect a diminishing in demand for Canadian.Much of the Canadian economy is based on the attractive price of commodities such as petroleum and agriculture products. Adjustment to that will not be pleasant and I fear some increased unemployment may occur.I'd say the first answerer is correct in that the investment in USA dollars, such as Treasury bills [which I believe anybody can buy, even online] are looking like an attractive investment. Expect the Canadian government to move some surplus cash into T-bills.As for long term affects - who knows? If the current rate of exchange is long lasting, Canada will have to make some adjustments. For the short term, probably not much affect will occur. Lessening of interest rates, especially for mortgages, is certainly one attractive method to keep the economy stimulated as the foreign trade decreases.
