3:18 PM ET CBC News Strong job growth, high immigration rates, and the rising costs of homeownership have helped fuel demand for rental housing, keeping the vacancy rate across the country at 2.6 per cent, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said Thursday.Bob Dugan, chief economist at the federal agency, said the October 2007 vacancy rates were unchanged from October 2006.British Columbia recorded the lowest provincial vacancy rates at 1.0 per cent. Rates were similarly low in Saskatchewan (1.2 per cent), Manitoba (1.5 per cent) and Alberta (1.6 per cent), owing to strong economic growth in those regions. The vacancy rate was 3.3 per cent in Ontario and 5.3 per cent in New Brunswick.Windsor, at 12.8 per cent, Saint John, at 5.2 per cent, and Moncton, at 4.3 per cent, had the highest vacancy rates in the country. By comparison, Kelowna, B.C., had no vacancies, Victoria's rate was 0.5 per cent and Greater Sudbury's was 0.6 per cent.Calgarians paid the highest rent for two-bedroom apartments at $1,089 ahead of Vancouverites at $1,084 and Torontonians at $1,061. Lowest rent for two-bedroom units were found in Quebec's Trois-Rivières ($487) and Saguenay ($490).
