Toronto has higher taxes, so once you take realestate out, its much higher. The calgary houses are more money, but they go up in price, so its an investment.BTW, to the gent above, Calgary is 1million.

Calgary is officially over 1 million this year and is growing like crazy. Trouble --lack of infrastructure. If you actually live and work there it is more expensive than T.O.

The first fellow is right to a degree, I worked in Calgary in the 1980's and have been in and out of Toronto, over the 20+ years I was a chef, and housing maybe a bit more expensive, tax wise but homes in Calgary go for over 450K, in Toronto people are moving back downtown into the highrise condos and they go for 120K to 3.5 mil for the penthouse.Food, transportation and other things are about the same, and safety in regard to crime and overall issues are about even now, and with Toronto having almost 4 million people and Calgary 600,000 to 750,000, there are bound to be some differences.

Toronto is more expensive to live then Calgary. Toronto dropped substantially from last year, when it ranked 47-th 50th on the list. But it's still expensive. _http://www.mercer.com/knowledgecenter/reportsummary.jhtml/dynamic/idContent/1095320 You can check Top 50 most expensive cities to live in.

Prices are no doubt high in both places; however, homes in Calgary will cost ~$100,000 more than in Toronto (on average) - but your commute won't be as long. Public transportation, property taxes, and parking prices are among the highest in Canada. (I hear property taxes in Toronto are higher though).Personally, living in Calgary, I find that most people I know are house poor and can't afford to do much as there's no money left over. Which city is more expensive? That depends on whether you're making enough money to cover expenses - most cities will pay based on the cost of living - wages in Calgary have increased along with the cost of living, but for most people the wage increases aren't enough. For someone working at Tim Hortons for $14/hr (~$1500/month after taxes) that's barely enough to cover the $1000/mo. rent on their one bedroom apartment. For a family that needs a 3 bedroom house (~$450K) your mortgage payments end up being ~$2500/mo if you put 10% down - I don't know too many people making that kind of money from 1 income (daycare is min $800/month per child). The problem is the prices don't get any cheaper the farther out of the city core you go, so these are the prices everyone is faced with, not just the inner city types.I just think the wages haven't caught up to the massive increase in cost of living we've seen in the last 2 years. The link below states that in Nov. 2006 Calgary surpased Toronto in average costs.
