We live in a 2 bed/2 bath apartment in San Diego and pay just over $1,400. It's one of the "inbetween" areas of San Diego. When I lived a half a mile from the beach we paid $1,600 a month for a 750 sq ft cottage.I am moving to San Francisco at the end of the July and it took us FOREVER to find an affordable apartment in a decent neighborhood. We are going to be paying $1795 for a 2 bed/1 bath older apartment. Most 2 bedrooms in the city are $2,000-$3,000I think it definitely depends on not only the city but depends greatly on the neighborhood of that city.
That much would get you a really nice 1000 sq ft place in Ft. Worth, TX. One thing I did years ago was look for a repo or HUD home. Check the listings under www.hud.gov. You can find some cheap places that only need a little TLC and a mortgage company to give you a loan.I bought a 1200 sq ft brick home with one car garage for under $50,000. My monthly payment was less than $500 at first...but since the taxes and value of home has gone up over the last 5 yrs....I now pay $543.00 a month. My house is now appraised at $85,500.oo
